After a short 30 min drive we got to San Sebastian, I read that the the old city center parte vieja was the prettiest so we drove right to the water front and found
a parking garage where our van could fit. The city has a nice vibe, it is not to big but has some nice restaurants, a large farmers market and friendly people. After having a cup of coffee, doing
some groceries, wandering around the pretty old city center and enjoying the heat in the sun, we drove on to find a spot to sleep. The first spot we went to look for ended up not being there
anymore so we had to drive on a bit further until we found a spot close to a little village called Lekeitio. Once we arrived and got settled Ferdinand spotted a nail in our tire so we will have
to get that fixed tomorrow.
We woke up early to drive on towards Bilbao early. Our first stop was getting our tire fixed. They weren’t able to do so, so we decided to change to our spare which
luckily had a new tire. So safely onwards to Bilbao.
After checking out the old city centre “casco viejo” and visiting the merkado ribeira supposedly the largest indoor market.
I thought it was a little disappointing but maybe because my expectations were to high or that most of the products were meat and fish. They did have stands with
fresh fruits and vegetables also eco so still a good place to do some shopping. After that we walked towards the Guggenheim museum. We came across the green bistrot a restaurant which served a
lot of lovely vegan Pintxos. The Guggenheim was an amazing buiding with nice art pieces a must visit when in this city. After a long day strolling around we parked our home on wheels in the
harbor of Getxo. Off to parque national los picos tomorrow
Parque national de los Picos de Europa
After sleeping in the harbor of Getxo and going for a walk in the morning we got in the van and drove toward parque national de los picos de Europa. With a couple
of stops along the way to enjoy the beautiful views we got closer and closer to the large Picos. We never expected to arrive in such a beautiful and sereen place. I guess just like a lot of other
people we didn’t know Spain had places like these. Once we arrived around lunch time at our sleeping destination in a little mountain village called Posada de Valdeon I made some awesome pumpkin
pancakes (check the recipe here…. ) and chilled the rest of the afternoon. Although the breeze is a little chilly once your out of the wind and in the sun it felt lovely! No jackets no sweaters
just a t-shirt and the beautiful view.
We had a good night sleep and an easy morning. Around 10 we decided to go for a walk to the nearest mountain village. It was a beautiful walk, along the way we only
met a couple of dogs, cats, sheep, cows and lizards other than that it was really quiet and peaceful. After having a snack and a walk through the tiny village we went back. All together we walked
about 3 hours. We made a big lunch and the rest of the afternoon we did nothing except sleep a little enjoy the sun and read.
Parque natural de Somiedo
Once we were on our way again and driving through a lot of u turns we got to the nearest larger town Arriondas we had a cup of coffee and headed out towards Oviedo.
After a couple of nights without a hot shower we decided to find a swimming pool and swim a couple of laps like the old days… after that we had the best hot shower we had for a week. After doing
groceries we headed towards parque natural de somiedo were we want to go tomorrow. We are now parked in a little mountain village called Entrago.
Our first idea was to drive down toward the start of the hike to the lakes in Parque natural de Somiedo. But once we got a couple of km away from the start we hit a
dirt road. Which looked slippery so we decided to turn around since our van doesn’t do slippery dirt roads very well. We weren’t disappointed at all once we drove on and saw what a beautiful
places we came across. Some cute villages on the slope of a hill with snow on top. It gave a good feeling knowing there are still quite a bit of places like these on the earth that live off of
the elements and no high consumption mentality yet. After a million curves and steep roads we drove towards the coast and into cloudy weather sadly, but we can’t complain after blue skies for the
past week. Tonight we sleep at a pretty surfers walhalla called playa de Frexulfe.
Our journey continued towards the west coast of Spain. We hadden’t done much laundry yet so decided to find a lavendaria autoservice. Which they had in a city
called A Coruna. After waiting for the laundry we visited the best Vegan restaurant I have been in a while. After a Burrito, Pizza (with good cheese!), and chocolate mousse we drove on to the
beach. (check our map for the location) Playa de Traba. Tomorrow we are planning to visit Santiago de Compostela and then hit for the borders to Portugal.
Santiago de Compostela
What can I say a nice city with pretty old buildings a lot of tourist shops and good coffee. Other than that we didn’t feel much of the vibe. Maybe I am being to
negative.. Maybe it is a better idea to visit this place when there are pilgrims walking around like during summer.
Now that we are almost at the border we are probably driving towards Portugal today. So by the time this blog is online we will be in our fourth countries of this
