Pitta Imbalanced Menstruation

Updated: Nov 19, 2023

Pitta imbalanced menstruation

I want to scream and shout and let it all out…Sounds familiar? Yes, it is from a song, but does it also ring a bell about your emotions each time you start your menstruation? Do you feel angry and struggle with headaches? Well, this is what I like to call the Angry- Pitta Period. And I have some good news for you!

These are symptoms many women struggle with every month. PMS and menstrual symptoms are not something we often talk about, even though many of us struggle with it.

You are not in it alone:

"It mostly started two or three days before my period. I would be feeling angry and fed up. My partner was always the one that had to deal with my grumpy mood. I would let it out on him. I didn't mean to, and I would judge myself after making a nasty comment he didn't deserve. Making him feel bad and judging myself would start a cycle where I would get angrier and angrier. I struggled with this every month. It didn't help our relationship at all. He knew it was the 'hormones,' but it bothered him, leading to multiple arguments. Enough was enough; I went online to find out if other women have the same issue and how they deal with it. I found Power up on Plants, and I am so glad I did. Karlijn explained what was happening and why I would get so angry before my period. Just the explanation alone helped my partner and me already. After changing my lifestyle and diet, I can now say my mood swings are gone, and my relationship has gotten stronger. It was worth making the few changes that I needed to make. I would recommend Karlijn's help to anyone"

The menstrual cycle is natural, but the mood swings and headaches are not!

Imagine having a smooth flow, no physical or emotional symptoms. Doesn't that sound like a dream come true? Well, it is possible, and I am going to explain to you how.

Let's break it down into why pitta- symptoms occur. What the symptoms are like and how to prevent them.

The role of pitta dosha

Each phase of our menstrual cycle is dominated by one of the three doshas. Our pitta phase starts at the moment of ovulation. We can sometimes experience extra pitta-related symptoms during (the start) of this phase. Think of heat flushes, agitation, irritation, extreme hunger, mood swings, etc.

The elements of pitta are fire and water, and its characteristics are; hot, light, liquid, oily, sharp, spreading. This means that the symptoms that we experience have similar characteristics.

"Like attracts like and the opposite brings balance"

It is a saying in Ayurveda, which means that when we experience symptoms, we will naturally crave things with similar characteristics. For example, when we feel irritated, we often crave hot and spicy food with the same characteristics. But in Ayurveda, we strive to introduce the opposite qualities which will lead to harmony. For example, when you feel hot, you will choose to present activities and food with cooling qualities to balance the heat in your body.

When thinking of the above pitta characteristics and like attracts like then, it is logical which things will aggravate pitta dosha. For example, During hot (summer) weather having hot spicy, salty foods, caffeine, stress, and anger will naturally increase pitta in the body. The characteristics of excess pitta dosha will then be seen in your cycle the following month. You can tell whether you have pushed your Pitta dosha out of balance through the symptoms below.

Healing painful pitta period

The following steps will help you heal your period symptoms, but always remember that everybody is unique. So feel free to schedule a free 15 min call with me if you have any questions on your journey to a natural flow and not having to struggle each month.

  1. Gentleness in all aspects of life Don't try to force things to go your way but go with the flow of nature. Be gentle, and let go of perfectionism. When feeling judgemental of yourself or others, take a couple of deep breaths and take another look at the situation.

  2. Boost your metabolism Your health depends on the ability to digest the nutritional, emotional, and sensory information we consume. When you have stable and robust digestive power, you will be able to create healthy tissues, eliminate waste properly, and produce enough energy.

  3. Abhyanga oil massage Abhyanga is an ancient practice that nourishes the body from the outside in, while also balancing the doshas. When struggling with a pitta imbalance, use coconut oil (during warm weather), sunflower oil, or specific pitta herbal oil.

  4. Cooling foods pitta is the fire element in our body, and when we struggle with too much pitta, we tend to struggle with too much heat. To counter this heat, focus on eating cooling foods, spices, and oils and eliminate spicy, hot, and excess sour food. Cooling foods are adequately cooked, fresh, and full of flavor.

  5. Drink hibiscus rose petal or mint tea During your entire cycle.
